Driving in France: Advice & Tips

If you are planning to take the wheel when in France, remember to avoid alcohol. France has stricter drunk driving laws than many countries; the alcohol limit is 0.5 mg/ml. Drive on the right and take care when overtaking — allow more space between you and the car in front so you can see further down the road ahead. You should be aware that the urban speed limits begin at the town or city sign (which is not always where the first 50km/h sign is situated), usually denoted by a white name panel with a red border, and the limit ends where the name panel has a diagonal black bar through it. Driving in France requires a full driving license. Motorways have a speed limit of 130 kmph, open roads are 90 kmph, dual carriageways are 110 kmph, and towns are 50 kmph. For visiting tourists who have held a valid license for less than two years, the permitted speed limits on all roads are different and often less. If carhire in France, be sure you check the many rules of the road before you head out.

France is a magnificent country. It attempts to define indefinable chic, and that is the very essence that so many people associate with France. When in France, you can savor the rich art and romance and envelop yourself in the timeless zest for life — the joie de vivre — that the French are so famously known for.
