Places to visit around Ibiza

Culturally, the region to head to is the Old Town. Dalt Vila, which means ‘High Town’, can be entered via a drawbridge and through the Portal de Ses Taules, on either side of which stands majestic statues. You then enter the main square, the Palza de Vila, from which emanates a picturesque array of cobbled alleyways lined with intriguing art galleries and souvenir shops. Through the rampart breaks visitors can admire fantastic views of the countryside below, especially from the battlements. The bastions are, in fact, considered the best-kept on earth and the wall has been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Here, you’ll also find Santa Maria d’Eivissa, a 14th century church sitting at the highest point of the city. However, much of it had to be reconstructed in the 1700s after destruction by Spanish troops.

To find out more information about the city’s heritage visit the Museo Arqueològic, located in the Plaça de la Catedral and home to artifacts dating back to the foundation of the city in 7BC. Museo Monografico del Puig de Molins is another museum worth visiting and is thought to contain the largest selection of Punic art in the whole of Europe. A couple of important landmarks are the statues of General Vara de Rey, who was born on the island and was killed during the Cuban War, and Guillem de Montgrí, who led the Catalan army into Ibiza for King James I. It’s also worth checking out the unique Homenaje a los Corsarios: officially erected in the early 20th century, this monument was made to acknowledge the repeated pirate attacks which inadvertently helped shape the city.

The Marina Botafoch is a fantastic place for a stroll to enjoy the warm weather and sunshine: sit out on a cafe terrace and watch the expensive, luxury yachts floating in the harbor. If you fancy, you can even have your own boat ride. Sa Penya is another intriguing district, and remnants of its fishing village past are still visible. This is a perfect place to relax before the night kicks in. When you choose car hire in Ibiza you’ll be able to use your time well and explore this intriguing city properly.
