Menorca is an island of the East coast of Spain but still considered a part of Spain. The excellent warm, sunny year round weather means this island is a very popular tourist resort. Apart from the traditional sunny sandy beaches there are a variety of other activities including: visiting the local distillery by the harbour, visit the island’s ancient caves, coastal nature reserve, relax in green open spaces, go Go Karting and take in the local history with Menorca’s museums. If you want more than the traditional relaxing holiday on the beach and soaking up the sun, the local food, culture and activities will keep you more than entertained. If you want to spend some time travelling around the island why not hire a car and explore the less trodden roads of Menorca that only the natives know. Car hire companies such as Hertz, Avis, Argus Car hire offer car hire direct from the airport as well as drop off so it takes the hassled out of hiring a car.
Menorca Airport information
Mahon Airport (MAH) serves the island for all air flights. It is located less than three miles to the southwest of the city. It first began operations on March 24, 1969. Until that time, civilian air service had used the San Luis Airport. It has expanded to 16 gates, and it serves 36 airports and 35 cities in four countries. Over a million passengers use the airport each year, and use the cheap car hire in Menorca to travel throughout the island. Almost 50 airlines use the airport. In September of 2006, a portion of the roof collapsed due to heavy rains. It trapped some twenty people temporarily, and the ensuing repairs and retrofit were completed in 2008. Charter flights are available to many other places including Amsterdam, the Isle of Man, Brussels, Frankfurt and Dusseldorf in Germany, Dublin, Berne, Prague, and many other European airports. There are no conference facilities in the terminal, but there are ATMs and a bank. The airport also has some cafeterias, three restaurants, and four bars. Passengers have the convenience of a travel agency located within the terminal as well as a lost and found. Shopping inside includes jewelry, footwear, magazines, gift items, and Menorca handcrafts.
Places to visit around Menorca
The best attraction on Menorca is the island itself, which can be best seen if you find a car hire in Menorca during your stay. You will probably want to walk the beaches in some of the less traveled areas, or you might want to visit the highest point on the island, El Toro, which is 1174 feet above sea level. When you decide to see some of the sights other than those relating to nature, you might go to the Castell de Santa Agueda. It is only a few miles from the town of Ferreries and off the main road. It is the ruin of a fort stronghold for Roman soldiers, located on the second highest point of Menorca. Menorca is most noted for archaeological remains. Cavalleria, which is west of Fornells, has numerous discoveries that make up what is called Menorca's Outdoor Museum. Some of the discoveries that have been unearthed thus far include a limestone oven, a Muslim mosque, an English watchtower, and huts and fishing shelters. The area is the home of the ancient Roman City of Sanisera, and each year from June to October, there are attempts to reclaim more of the city.
