Places to visit around Malaga

A fantastic place to start exploring Malaga is in the Old Town. This area sits with the Montes de Malaga to the north and the harbor to the south. Here you can marvel at the city’s cathedral, built between the 16th and 18th centuries. It’s worth having a look inside to admire the two magnificent organs and the beautifully carved choir stalls. The Iglesia del Sagrario and the church of Santiago are both examples of Gothic style architecture, and the Iglesia de la Victoria, constructed in the 17th century, boasts beautiful Baroque plasterwork.

The Picasso Museum, an Andalucían palace built in the 1500s, is another major attraction. It houses approximately 160 pieces of Pablo Picasso’s artwork, including paintings, drawings, ceramics and sculptures. If you’re particularly interested in this prestigious Malagian artist, it’s also worth visiting the Fundación Picasso Museo Casa Natal, where Picasso was born. For more contemporary art, the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo, set in an old warehouse, is home to a collection of interesting exhibitions.

For a different perspective of the city it’s worth making your way up to the Castillo de Gibralfaro. Once a 14th century fortress, now tourists can visit its museum and attractive gardens. Another fantastic panorama is found by climbing up to the Alcazaba. This structure was built in the 11th century as the palace fortress during Moorish rule. Architecturally, the oldest feature is the magnificent Roman amphitheater dating back to 1BC.

For a break from the bustle of the city, Malaga is home to a range of beautiful beaches. The beaches are the reason why most people come to visit this city.
