History of Germany
Germany’s identity as a distinct region came into being when Julius Caesar referred to it as Germania after he conquered Gaul (present-day France). The tribes that inhabited the area were of various origins, but by the time of the Roman Empire, they had become an ethnically similar group of Germanic peoples. Although the Romans made various incursions into Germany, they never conquered and held the territory. Indeed, invasions of Germanic tribes into Roman-held areas are one reason for the fall of the Empire.
By 843, the various Germanic kingdoms and duchies united into the Kingdom of Germany. Into the Middle Ages and Renaissance, Germany became synonymous with the Holy Roman Empire, which, at its peak, comprised much of northern and central Europe, including parts of Italy, Austria, the Low Countries, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, France and Poland. The Empire lasted until the early 19th century, when the Napoleonic Wars broke up the territory. Various configurations existed throughout the 1800s, until the country of Germany, largely as we know it today, was created in 1871.
The political complications and power struggles of the countries of Central and Eastern Europe led to the conflagration known as World War I or the Great War. Germany was seen as the aggressor, and, when the country and its allies lost the war, the rest of the world punished Germany politically and economically. Some theories maintain that this humiliation led to the nationalism of the Nazi party and the rise of Hitler. After the horror of World War II, Germany has recovered into a peaceful state that is the economic powerhouse of Europe.
